This chapter is a biography (life story) of Bibha Chowdhuri – India’s first woman physicist. She was born in 1913 in Kolkata when India was under British rule and girls were not encouraged to study science. Bibha loved physics. Her Struggle: She worked quietly, without caring for awards or fame. She faced gender bias all her life but kept working on cosmic rays and subatomic particles.
Her Legacy Today:
- Died in 1991.
- In 2020, Government of India started “Bibha Chair Professorship”.
- International Astronomical Union (IAU) named star HD 86081 in Leo constellation as “Bibha”.
