This shows that even 2,000 years ago, Indians knew the full geography of their country!

๐️ Article 1 of the Indian Constitution says: "India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States."

❓ NCERT EXERCISE QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Q1. What does Sapta Sindhava mean and where is it mentioned? Ans: Sapta Sindhava means "land of the seven rivers." It is mentioned in the Rig Veda, India's most ancient text, and refers to the northwest region of the Indian Subcontinent. The word comes from "Sindhu" which means the Indus River.
Q2. Which text first gave a name to the entire Indian Subcontinent? Ans: The Mahabharata was the first text to give names to the entire Indian Subcontinent. It used the terms Bharatavarsha (country of the Bharatas) and Jambudvipa (island of the jamun tree) to refer to the whole of India.
Q3. How did Persians and Greeks name India? Ans: The Persians were the first foreigners to name India. They changed the word Sindhu to Hindu/Hind because they could not pronounce "S" as the Indians did. The Greeks then borrowed the Persian word, dropped the "H", and called India "Indoi" or "Indike". These names eventually became "India" in English. All these names ultimately come from the Sindhu (Indus) River.
Q4. How does the Indian Constitution mention India's names? Ans: The Indian Constitution uses the phrase "India, that is Bharat" at the very beginning. The Hindi version says "Bharat, arthath India." This shows that both India and Bharat are official names of our country and that the ancient name Bharat holds equal importance in modern India.
Q5. What does Tianzhu mean and who used it? Ans: Tianzhu was a name used by the ancient Chinese for India. It means "Heavenly Master" and was used to show deep respect for India as the birthplace of Lord Buddha and a land of great spiritual wisdom. The famous Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang used this name when he visited India in the 7th century CE.
Q6. Why did foreigners travel to India in ancient times? Ans: People travelled to India for many reasons:
- For trade — India was famous for spices, textiles, and precious stones
- For religion and pilgrimage — Buddhism attracted many Chinese and Central Asian visitors
- For education — India had great universities like Nalanda
- For cultural exchange — to learn Indian art, science and philosophy
- Some came for political conquest — to expand their empires
Q7. What is the significance of the Vishnu Purana's description of Bharata? Ans: The Vishnu Purana defines Bharata as "the country lying north of the ocean and south of the snowy mountains." This was a very precise geographical definition. The ocean refers to the Indian Ocean (south) and the snowy mountains refer to the Himalayas (north). This description matches the natural boundaries of India even today.
❓ IMPORTANT EXTRA QUESTIONS
Q1. Is "Bharata" a name given by foreigners? Ans: No! This is False. Bharata is a name given by the ancient Indian people themselves. It first appears in the Rig Veda and became the most widely used Indian name for the subcontinent. Foreigners mostly used names derived from the word Sindhu.
Q2. Was the word "Hindu" always related to religion? Ans: No. In ancient Persian, the word "Hindu" was a purely geographical term used to refer to the people and land near the Sindhu (Indus) River. It was not connected to any religion. The religious meaning developed much later.
Q3. What are the natural boundaries of India? Ans: India's natural boundaries are the Himalayas in the north (snowy mountains) and the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal in the south, west, and east respectively. These natural barriers gave India its distinct geographical identity.
