Chapter 4: Timeline and Sources of History

🌟 Introduction

History helps us understand how people lived in the past and how the present world has been shaped. It is often described as a connection between the past and present.

To study history properly, we need:

  • A way to measure time → Timeline
  • Evidence to know what happened → Sources of History

🕰️ 1. Timeline (Historical Time)

🔹 What is a Timeline?

A timeline is a line that shows events in the order in which they happened (chronological order).

👉 It helps us:

  • Understand sequence of events
  • Know which event happened first
  • Compare different historical periods

🔹 How Time is Measured in History

📅 Calendar System

  • The world mainly uses the Gregorian Calendar
  • Time is divided into:
    • CE (Common Era) → After birth of Jesus Christ
    • BCE (Before Common Era) → Before birth of Jesus Christ

👉 Example:

  • 1947 CE → India got independence
  • 560 BCE → Birth of Buddha

🔹 Important Time Units

  • Year → 365 days
  • Decade → 10 years
  • Century → 100 years
  • Millennium → 1000 years

🔹 Importance of Timeline

  • Makes history easy to understand
  • Shows development over time
  • Helps in remembering dates and events clearly

🏺 2. Sources of History

🔹 What are Sources of History?

Sources are things that give us information about the past.
They can be objects, writings, or even stories.

👉 Without sources, we cannot know history.

🔹 Types of Sources of History

1. 🗣️ Oral Sources

Information passed by speaking:

  • Stories
  • Folklore
  • Songs
  • Traditions

👉 These are useful but sometimes not fully accurate.

2. 📜 Literary (Written) Sources

Written records of the past:

  • Books and manuscripts
  • Inscriptions
  • Accounts by travellers

👉 These help us understand:

  • Culture
  • Society
  • Events

3. 🏺 Archaeological Sources

Objects found by digging the earth:

  • Tools
  • Pottery
  • Coins
  • Buildings and monuments

👉 These give real physical evidence of history.

4. 🎨 Artistic Sources

  • Paintings
  • Sculptures
  • Carvings

👉 These show:

  • Lifestyle
  • Art and culture

👨‍🔬 3. Who Studies History?

Different experts help us understand the past:

  • Geologists → Study Earth (rocks, soil, mountains)
  • Palaeontologists → Study fossils (plants & animals)
  • Anthropologists → Study human culture and society
  • Archaeologists → Study remains by digging

🧠 4. Why Sources are Important

Sources help us:

  • Know about ancient life
  • Understand culture and traditions
  • Learn about technology and development
  • Connect past with present

👉 Historians use different sources together to get a complete picture of history.

📝 5. Timeline + Sources Together

  • Timeline tells “WHEN” something happened
  • Sources tell “WHAT” and “HOW” it happened

👉 Both are needed to understand history clearly.

📌 Quick Revision Points

  • Timeline = sequence of events
  • CE = after Christ, BCE = before Christ
  • Sources = evidence of past
  • Types of sources: Oral, Literary, Archaeological, Artistic
