  • A constellation is a group of stars that appears to form a recognisable pattern in the night sky
  • These patterns are named after mythological characters, animals, or objects
  • The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has officially recognised 88 constellations
  • Constellations are not real clusters — the stars are at very different distances from Earth, but from our view they appear to form patterns

✅ How to Locate the Pole Star Using Big Dipper:

1. Find the Big Dipper (7 stars like a ladle)
2. Look at the two outermost stars of the "bowl" of the Big Dipper
3. Draw an imaginary line connecting these two stars
4. Extend the line in the direction the opening of the bowl faces
5. The bright star you reach → That is the POLE STAR (Polaris)!

  • It is located almost directly above Earth's North Pole
  • It does not appear to move as Earth rotates
  • Ancient travellers, sailors, and explorers used it to find the North direction without a compass!

✅ Why is Venus called the Morning Star / Evening Star?

  • Venus is the brightest object in the sky after the Sun and Moon
  • It can be seen just before sunrise in the eastern sky (Morning Star)
  • And just after sunset in the western sky (Evening Star)
  • It is not actually a star — it is a planet, but its brightness makes it look star-like

✅ What about Pluto?

  • Pluto was earlier considered a planet but was reclassified as a Dwarf Planet in 2006 by the IAU
  • It does not meet the full criteria to be called a planet

✅ The Moon — Earth's Natural Satellite:

  • The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite
  • Distance from Earth = approximately 3,84,000 km
  • The Moon does not produce its own light — it reflects the Sun's light
  • The Moon takes approximately 27–29 days to complete one orbit around Earth
  • The Moon has no atmosphere, no liquid water, extreme temperature variations

  • As the Moon orbits Earth, different portions of the lit side are visible from Earth
  • This causes the phases of the Moon:

  • New Moon = Moon between Earth and Sun; dark side faces us; not visible

  • A galaxy is a massive collection of billions of stars, gas, and dust bound together by gravity

  • Our home galaxy
  • A spiral galaxy — shaped like a giant spinning pinwheel
